Mulkirigala Rajamaha wiharaya

Mulkirigala Rajamaha Viharaya is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in the Southern Province.

You can reach this place from Tangalle town to Beliatta and from there take the Weeraketiya Dammulla road.

There are many theories about the king who created this.  In books such as the Mahawansa and the Chulawansa, this temple is known as Mulgiriya, Mulkirigala.  Also known as Dakshinagiri Vihara.

In the old pond in the courtyard of the temple, there is an inscription from the 9th-10th centuries AD called Muhudugiriya. It is known as the Giriba Vihara of the Bodhisattva dynasty, as well as the Samudragiri Vihara of the Polonnaruwa period and as Adamberg in European records.  Also known as the Mulagiri temple of the Kandy era.

The paintings here are inspired by the Kandy tradition.  It depicts the Jataka stories of Wessanthara Jataka and Thelapaththa. Also, the statues of women wearing jewels and topless drums have a special place.

Renovated under various kings, this temple is still a Buddhist shrine that showcases our history and artistic talents. Granted under various kings, this temple is still a shrine to our history and art.
