Srilankan Island Of Wild Horses - Delft Island


 Delft Island is an island in the western part of the Jaffna, 80 km from the Indian mainland, 42 km from Talaimannar and Rameshwaram, in the middle of the Palk Strait.  It covers an area of ​​43 square kilometers and the island covers an area of ​​27 km.  Apart from Talaimannar Island, this island is the most inhabited land in Sri Lanka close to India.

   

More than a 100 people are transported to the island at a time by the Navy in two large boats, 'Neduntaraki' and 'Vadataraki', to reach Delft. There are five boats on Delft Island.  


There are several special places that tourists can visit on this island.

  1. Baobab Tree.

  2. Growing stone (cobra stone / stone near the temple)

  3. The Lighthouse (Queen's Tower).

  4. Hirigal wall design

  5. Dutch tower built by pigeons.

  6. Dutch Fort. 


Horses and ponies from the horses brought here by the Dutch who came to Delft Island still remain inall numbers on the island.  Therefore, visitors to the island will also have the opportunity to see wild horses and ponies, which can only be seen on Delft Island in Sri Lanka. 


The island is located on a layer of limestone. The palm groves add to the beauty of this island with its beautiful beaches. Once a year, the island becomes a bird sanctuary, home to migratory birds.
