Riverstone - Matale

 The area was known as "re western" by the British who ruled Ceylon in the past.  This was due to the fact that the climate in the area was similar to that thair countries.

  But today it is known as Riverstone and is a popular tourist destination. 

 

Riverstone has a climate similar to Horton Plains.  Rivaston can be reached via Rattota, about 28 km from Matale. (takes about 1 1/2 hours)

This area belongs to the Knuckles Reserve and is located at an altitude of 1265m above sea level.

There are three main areas in Riverstone that belong to the Knuckles Reserve. 

1. Riverstone Gorge

 2. Mountains

 3. Fall on the outside 

Out of these 3 places, Pitawalapathana belongs to the dry zone.  

At the end of Pitawalapathana is the Little Lokantha, which is made of granite stone.

The area is rich in grasses.  Tall but twisted trees can be seen on the plain slopes.  The area is very fertile due to the frequent rains.

 1. Sera Falls

 2. Vaddapani Falls

 3. Doowili Falls

 4. Bambarakiri Falls  

You have to go over Bambarakiri Falls over a scary bridge.  

Going past Bambarakiri Falls you will come across "Manigala" Kanda.  Although it is easy to view this rock from the Pitawalapathana area,  you have to climb Manigala to experience the beauty of this journey.  Many foreigners come here to climb 'Manigala.
